PRINCE RUPERT to KETCHIKAN

Saturday, May 20th  Day 36   Klewnuggit Inlet to Prince Rupert   50.7nm

We woke early to beautiful blue skies, the waters mirror smooth reflecting the trees, mountains and snow capped peaks. It’s so gorgeous!  I took some photos, made a fruit salad for later and got ready to handle the lines and fenders. Setting free from ASD was super smooth this morning!

We left the inlet around 8:15 heading north up the rest of the way up “the trench” in Grenville Channel. GPS had us arriving at Prince Rupert at 2:30. Tom made reservations at Cow Bay Marina. I was looking forward to doing some tourista things things. Captain John informed me that I have earned my liberty card!

Morning Star from the Shearwater encounter.

Shipping industry is huge here.

The cruise up the trench took us past a Nordhavn and the sailboat, Morning Star, which has been traveling in our direction for several days now. We made our way through the channel and through Arthur Passage past Kennedy and Smith Islands. We reached Chatham Sound rounding Kaien Island to Price Rupert located at the head. The destination was Cow Bay Marina.

Sunday, May 21th  Day 37  Prince Rupert

We had blue skies early before the weather declined. After a sausage and nest egg breakfast with John and Kay, Robin the dock master (they call them wharfinger’s up here) came down in the wind and his life jacket, having all of us move forward so a 70 footer could land on the dock. Why that was not planned yesterday, is puzzling. Never the less, we all readied about moving 150 feet of boats (3) forward, resetting 17 docks lines. Yes, my arms and shoulders feel it!

Look who I found hanging out!

We shopped for some awesome links and cheeses.

Cow Bay Cafe

Kay and I walked about looking around and made reservations for dinner at the Cow Bay Cafe. Dinner was excellent! We all had a great time.

Monday, May 22th  Day 38

It turned out to be a rainy day.  First we visited the interpertive center, learning some history and the lay of the land.

Then enjoyed to the museum, then the guys joined us for an early supper at The Cargo Kitchen restaurant. The food and service was awesome. Our server sent us home with glasses from the near by Wheelhouse Brewing Company.

Tuesday, May 23th  Day 39 Prince Rupert, B.C. to Ketchikan, AK   94nm

Yesterday, May 23rd, day 41. We were up at 4am, pulling on the heavy foul weather gear in order to depart Prince Rupert in the wind and rain. (Sorry no pictures when I'm working.) This was one of our somewhat less than glamorous transits that we've experienced. It was a 12 hour run to Ketchikan, high beam seas and winds for the first six hours. It's amazing how well the vessel and Captain John handle it! I was lucky to get some cinnamon rolls made and get the fruit out of the fridge. Not a fan of the beam seas!

Green Island Light Station

We have crossed the Dixon Entrance and are in Alaska!

Howdy. We were on Celebrity Millennium in Ketchikan back in May and I spotted Pairadice from our balcony. I'm pretty sure I'd like to blow my inheritance on an explorer yacht some day. Congrats on living the dream!

Thanks Matt for your kind comments. Pairadice has certainly been a work in progress. The blog has been a lot of fun. The boat and blog are high maintenance though... need the intermittent internet to travel and post. I'm think I'll write a book :-) Tracey from Las Vegas
